2. Get to know the Archaeological Zone of Tulum

This archaeological site facing the sea in the Riviera Maya is one of the most photographed in Mexico for the beautiful contrast that occurs between the sober ruins and the radiant Caribbean.

The main building of the set is El Castillo, which was an astronomical observatory and a lighthouse that helped Mayan sailors navigate the Great Barrier Reef located a few meters from the coast.

Other important constructions of the Archaeological Zone of Tulum are The Palace, the Temple of the Descending God and the Temple of the Frescoes.

The first was a residential building of the political and religious elite of the walled city of Tulum, while the second is so named by a figure in the doorway that seems to descend from the sky.

In the Temple of the Frescoes there are some paintings of fabulous beings that make us suppose that the Mayan artists had a great imagination or carried out the works under the effects of some hallucinogen

3. Tour the Tulum National Park

The archaeological site of Tulum is located within this national park, which also includes a long strip of beaches, forests, wildlife reserves and many other attractions.

The Tulum National Park covers an area of 664 hectares and covers the coastal area, both offshore and inland, approximately between the municipal seat of Tulum and the point where Casa Cenote is located.

Apart from beautiful beaches, in the park there are several environments of great beauty and importance for biodiversity, such as mangroves, cenotes and tropical forests.

The park hosts several species of fauna at risk of disappearance, such as white and loggerhead turtles, which spawn on the beaches of the protected area.

4. Make a tour of the best cenotes

The municipality of Tulum and its surrounding areas are dotted with cenotes, the marvelous aquatic bodies that are formed by the slow dissolution of the superficial mantle of limestone by the effect of the waters.

The Mayans believed that the cenotes were the entrance to the underworld or the world of the dead, but beyond mythology, in these bodies of karst origin life bursts, as can be witnessed by the thousands of tourists who go to dive and swim in them .

The Cenote Dos Ojos is thus named for its two cavities that resemble the eyes of a stony and colossal monster and is integrated into a system of underwater caves over 60 km long, being a paradise for diving.

5. Spend a lovely day at Paradise Beach

White and smooth sand; warm waters, clear and incomparable blue; radiant and hot sun; and the best Caribbean cocktails is what awaits you at Playa Paraíso, for many, the most spectacular beach in Mexico.

This natural jewel of the Riviera Maya is located 7 km from the municipal seat of Tulum and has all the services and entertainment for you to spend a splendid day sunbathing, resting, swimming, reading or sharing with friends while daisies parade , the frozen beers and pina coladas.

In the vicinity of Playa Paraiso there are pleasantly rustic hotels, but with all the comfort and the best service.

6. Meet the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve

This protected natural area covers an area of 528 thousand hectares and is shared by the Quintana Roo municipalities of Tulum and Felipe Carrillo Puerto.

The reserve is located 50 km from the municipal seat of Tulum and is worthy of admiration for its archaeological ruins, petenes, sandbanks, cenotes, mangroves and other environments among which more than 20 Mayan communities live in perfect harmony with their natural environment.

Particularly attractive are the petenes, conglomerates of trees up to 30 meters high that rise between the wetlands and that constitute ecosystems almost unique in the world. The Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve was declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco in 1987.

7. Visit the Archaeological Zone of Cobá

47 km from the municipal capital of Tulum, located in the Quintana Roo jungle, is this archaeological site in which stands out the Pyramid of Nohoch Mul, which at 42 meters high, is the highest prehispanic construction in the Yucatan Peninsula.

The Pyramid of Nohoch Mul has 120 steps and from its peak there are spectacular views of the immense green carpet of the jungle, adorned by the blue of the lagoons.

Some architectonic details of Cobá make think that maintained close relations with other pre-Columbian towns of the central region of Mexico, particularly with Teotihuacán.

8. Dive in the Great Mayan Reef

This immense coral barrier of about one thousand kilometers covers the coasts of Mexico, Belize, Guatemala and Honduras, being the second largest in the world, after the Great Barrier Reef in Oceania.

Due to its size and rich marine biodiversity, the Great Mayan Reef or Mesoamerican Reef System is one of the world sanctuaries for the sport of diving.

Through the clear and warm waters and between more than 65 types of stony corals that form the reef, divers admire barracudas, sea turtles, rays, moray eels and a great variety of species.

In Tulum, the Dive Shop operator Tulum takes you to dive to the Great Reef and the cenotes and if you want to get started in this fun sport, with them you can take the course, as they are members of the Professional Association of Diving Instructors.

The carnival has become a very attractive celebration in the Riviera Maya, excelling those of Cozumel, Playa del Carmen and Tulum.

In March the Alborada Maya takes place, a celebration with religious, musical, cultural and sporting events, whose purpose is to offer thanks to God for good harvests.

The celebration of the Talking Cross takes place in Tulum during the month of July, mixing pagan and Christian traditions. This festivity commemorates the discovery of a mahogany cross in a cenote of the Quintana Roo community of Chan Santa Cruz.

An event much appreciated by ecologists is the Sea Turtle Festival, which has the participation of the environmental communities of Cancun and the Riviera Maya.

On the beach of Xcacel, 16 km from Tulum, an emotional liberation ceremony of hundreds of baby turtles is organized.
